Firm Overview
While a volunteer with The Center’s Legal Initiatives Project (CLIP) in Denver, I learned first-hand how the law provides better remedies for some citizens than others. This experience compelled me to go to law school. I wanted to help those in need, especially those who need help navigating a legal system that may not be tailor-made to their situation. And while our legal system may not be perfect, it can manifest good in people’s lives. It provides for the protection of parental rights and parent-child relationships, regardless of the status or make-up of the family; the financial support of our children; and the ability to care for our loved ones in times of misfortune or after we’re gone. Much remains to be done, but the legal system today does provide an informed attorney with many tools to aid families in need, including non-traditional families.
After law school I was offered the opportunity to work for one of Colorado’s finest law firms. I accepted that offer and went to work for some of the most competent and ethical lawyers in Colorado. I enjoyed the work, but something was missing. I wanted to more directly help people in need. I wanted to help the less fortunate through more pro bono work. And, I wanted to help advance and protect the rights of Colorado’s non-traditional families. That’s why I left the firm in early 2008 to start my own practice.
Family law and estate planning allow me to interact daily with clients who need help navigating the legal system and protecting their rights as parents, spouses, and domestic partners. Knowing I helped a parent get the support he needs to raise his child, a couple to provide for each other in the event of tragedy, or a non-biological parent maintain a relationship with her child after a partnership dissolution gives me a great deal of satisfaction. This work speaks to my innate sense of justice and fairness, and the good the legal system can effectuate in peoples' everyday lives.
